This is not the first time we have had a long thread about the '-a' option, at least, and if we do not add it now then we will just debate this again in 8-10 months. The time wasted in the debate is much worse than the 160 bytes wasted on the disk. 160 bytes, on a disk that we allocate room in fragments of what, 4096 byte chunks? I forget now. I think Julian has the right idea. ... assuming there's no bugs in the code.
