Just to isolate this to a FreeBSD software issue have you tried booting to, say, a Knoppix live-cd and mounting the CD. Seems to me that if it works under one of the Linux live-cds that you can pretty much narrow it down to something with FreeBSD and/or it's interaction with your particular hardware.
