Greetings- Recently I needed decent X performance on a machine running 5.0-current and the video card in it was unsupported (a Number Nine SR9.) The only store nearby is Best Buy (no Fry's or anything close here..) You might want to check out the readily obtainable 3dfx 'Voodoo 3 3000AGP.' This is an AGP card which is probably in about the same price range as a Diamond Viper II ($100 w/ rebate at Best Buy) and appears to have excellent performance for the price and good support, details below: XFree86 Version 4.0.1 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400) Release Date: 1 July 2000 [stuff deleted] (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a (II) Module pcidata: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 0.1.0 (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libscanpci.a (II) Module scanpci: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 0.1.0 (II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libscanpci.a (--) PCI:*(1:0:0) 3Dfx Interactive Voodoo3 rev 1, Mem @ 0xfc000000/25, 0xf8000000/25, I/O @ 0x7800/8 [more stuff deleted] (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/tdfx_drv.o (II) Module tdfx: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/mouse_drv.o (II) Module mouse: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 (II) TDFX: Driver for 3dfx Banshee/Voodoo3 chipsets: 3dfx Banshee, 3dfx Voodoo3, 3dfx Voodoo5 (--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device (--) Chipset 3dfx Voodoo3 found (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a (II) Module vgahw: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 0.1.0 (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libint10.a (II) Module int10: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 (II) TDFX(0): Softbooting the board (through the int10 interface).
