It turned out that this problem is a regression in RubyGems 1.8 and hasn't been fixed upstream yet. http://rubyforge.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=29188&group_id=126&atid=575 The temporary workaround is to downgrade devel/ruby-gems to 1.7.2 so I've created an port for that out of the history: http://home.bluelife.at/patches/ruby-gems-1.7.2-port.tar.gz There is no need to reinstall any of the installed gems.
