I was assuming that GENERIC was intended to be a configuration that was most likely to boot on a wide range of machines without problems, therefore making the install process less painful. I guess since I always customize my kernels I never thought that people might use GENERIC for more than just installing. Makes sense for the "grandmother" portion of the user base. Thanks.
