You could instead pass the login name when invoking ssh:

ssh -l otheruser somehost

        -- or --

ssh otheruser@somehost

You can also arrange that logging into somehost is always achieved with
otheruser by adding the following fragment into ~/.ssh/config:

Host somehost
User otheruser
