I remember seeing a modification to the DirecPC modem to allow it to work with Linux when it's USB support wasn't so good. It seems the modem is meant to be used in a USB config but it has a standard port on it too (ethernet, serial?). The mod wasn't that hard either, the person just had to remove a cover on the modem or something of that nature - the port was sitting there waiting to be used. But take that with a grain of salt (actually, take a few). This is all coming from memory so it's possible I've remembered something incorrectly or DirectPC aren't using those modems any more.
