The "Failed to acquire the VirtualBox COM object." error was caused by a
corrupt ~/.config/VirtualBox folder.  Apparently it was created by either t=
he
failed runs as a normal user, or the successful runs as root (su from normal
user).  In any case, it was owned by root and unreadable.  After removing i=
t,
VirtualBox started normally.
