I'm in exactly the same situation as you.  The base perl system is
5.005_03

If you want to upgrade do what I just done, build & install from ports
then run:

use.perl port

This selects the version of perl installed from ports.

so perl -v = This is perl, v5.6.1 built for i386-freebsd

To switch back to the base perl use:

use.perl system

perl -v = This is perl, version 5.005_03 built for i386-freebsd
