Bind 9 is a lot pickier about the syntax of configuration and zone data files. Unless everything is syntactically correct, BIND will print warning messages into the system log and quit. You will have to update the named.conf file from Bind 8 before you can use it with Bind 9. Look in the system log /var/log/messages for indications of where the problems are.
