Simon, are there any reasons not to do so? No, that should work just fine, as long as the path in events.xml is updated accordingly, but shouldn't it be www/share/xml ? Actually the DTD is only used by xmllint to verify that the XML file is well-formed, and by editors (like Emacs) to support editing.
