While you're working on it, why not plan to make a port out of it instead of planning to put it back in the base? Is there any reason that it would need to be in the base, especially given that there is a userland version that (TMK) runs just fine? These aren't rhetorical questions btw. If there is a good reason I'd love to hear it, otherwise my vote is that it should be a port.
