Hi folks, I have the opportunity to introduce FreeBSD into a business which currently runs only Linux and NT (as far as servers go). They (my employers) have a need for an ftp server to allow files to be transferred between client sites and the office. At present, large files are transferred either via ZIP drive or mail. Neither method is optimal. So an ftp server is called for. We want to allow FTP from anywhere as we can't determine in advance the source of an incoming file. But we want to prevent anyone from reading the contents of a file on the server unless they are an employee. Off hand, that sounds like anon-ftp for incoming traffic and supplying an account for those that need to get files from the ftp server. Encrypting the data on the wire is another matter and I may have to discuss that requirement with the rest of the company. Perhaps encrypting the data before it is transferred is a suitable option. I don't know what hardware I'll get. But I'll be going with 3.3-stable and the default ftp server for now. Anticipated traffic is unknown at this time. My guess is < 1GB per day. I'll be disabling everything to and from this box except ssh and ftp.
