I personally use mpd-netgraph from /usr/ports/net to accomplish VPNs. It allows me to run PPTP (GRE). It works quite well from Windows and FreeBSD clients. I have not tried the pptpclient for Linux, however. The mpd documentation and sample config files have good pointers on getting PPTP working. If you need more help, I can send you my production configs for comparison. Recently, I've been trying to help people on this list get this setup. It seems firewall rules are getting in the way. I use ipfw, and have my rules setup so that this works. I guess your mileage may very.
