Hi For the first time since establishing a working ADSL/router setup (PPPoE) under FreeBSD 4.5 and UserPPP, I have checked the ppp.log file and was surprised to see it not just full of failure to connect messages, but clearly turning over every couple of hours! The Internet access for our school is routed through this ADSL link and has been running smoothly for the last 6 months. That this email arrives at the mailing list indicates that our link continues to work fine... A snippet of /var/log/ppp.log appears below: Mar 27 10:32:30 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Connected! Mar 27 10:32:30 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: opening -> dial Mar 27 10:32:30 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: dial -> carrier Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Disconnected! Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: carrier -> hangup Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Connect time: 5 secs: 0 octets in, 0 octets out Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: : 0 packets in, 0 packets out Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: total 0 bytes/sec, peak 0 bytes/sec on Wed Mar 27 10:32:35 2002 Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: hangup -> opening Mar 27 10:32:35 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Enter pause (30) for redialing. Mar 27 10:33:05 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Connected! Mar 27 10:33:05 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: opening -> dial Mar 27 10:33:05 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: dial -> carrier Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Disconnected! Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: carrier -> hangup Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Connect time: 5 secs: 0 octets in, 0 octets out Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: : 0 packets in, 0 packets out Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: total 0 bytes/sec, peak 0 bytes/sec on Wed Mar 27 10:33:10 2002 Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: hangup -> opening Mar 27 10:33:10 sjrouter ppp[56]: tun0: Phase: deflink: Enter pause (30) for redialing. The same sequence is repeated over and over, both in the current log file and the previous turned-over logs. UserPPP is called with -ddial -nat and the conf file sets logging to Phase tun. The ADSL router is connected via Ethernet (a second 'external' NIC) What is going on here? Is there a problem, or not? If you can shed some light on this matter, I'd be grateful to hear it!
