The data on the disk >is >essential for my work, I would appreciate early reply. Well, unless something fairly hideous happened, the data on the disk ought to be in fair shape, I'd expect. You'll need a computer to get at the data in any case, so if you're lucky(!), you may be able to just move the disk drive to the new system & boot it. Failing that, you should be able to connect the old disk to the new (or loaner) system, then (for each filesystem on the old disk) * fsck (raw filesystem name) * mount (mount point) (block filesystem name) If you don't recall the filesystems, "disklabel -r" may prove useful.
