Thanks a million.
Fetchmail has done what I need.

BTW: to those on the documentation project:
If this is a "FAQ" (and I'm sure it is), why isn't it in either the 
FAQ or the handbook under "mail" ?

Once again, thanks to the other people who responded.
(Yes, I know the ideal solution is if the ISP would let me
just use the ETRN option, but they don't want to do that, and
fetchmail works :-)
