There are two ways on which sane-backend talk to scanners. Libusb is one of the ways. I have two Epson scanners. One of them does use libusb one of them doesn't not. How do I know. Well in OpenBSD when the scanner uses libusb you have to remove uscanner driver from the kernel in order to use it.
