I have a standard Microsoft IntelliMouse Ps/2 (non-optical), and am running XFree86-4.
It doesn't work! The mouse acts extremely erratic.
From XF86Config-4:
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IntelliMouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse"
