Hello. Although I'm sure these questions will appear quite basic to the lot of you, I've only just installed FreeBSD 2.2.6 about a week ago, and need some assistance with a couple of issues. I've gotten user mode PPP up and running, as well as recompiling the kernel to support only that which I need. I've also sync'd my source tree, using CVSup, against RELENG_2_2 and rebuilt the "world". Now, the questions: 1) What is the best method, or sequence of events, that should be taken when sync'ing your source tree? After CVSup completes, and make'ing buildworld, is it safe to installworld immediately following that? Or should I do some other preparation before installworld? Finally, at what point in this process is it best to rebuild the kernel? Although I have completed the above the other day, with no obvious ill effects, I'm a bit concerned as to if I actually did it safely, or did something generally stupid. 2) Related to the above, is it safe to simply copy over the new config files into /etc if I haven't modified the originals since initially installing 2.2.6-release? I am also in need of a suggested utility to backup the system. I have an Exabyte 8700 scsi tape unit and have thus far been using tar to dump the system to tape. However, I've heard some "not so good" things regarding tar in general; although when asked to explain why, I usually get looks of confusion. :) Is there any truth to this? Or should I dump tar and use another utility for backup purposes?
