I didn't realize that there are IRC servers which demand an auth (ident) response. Most don't mind getting a refused connection on their auth attempts. I'd recommend using inetd's builtin auth service, assuming you're using 3.4-RELEASE or something more recent. The inetd(8) manual page documents it, and the /etc/inetd.conf file has a sample entry or two for it. Ciao, Sheldon.
