Some PPP implementations use "MS-CHAP" rather than MD5 when encrypting the challenge. MS-CHAP is a combination of MD4 and DES. If ppp was built on a machine with DES libraries avail- able, it will respond to MS-CHAP authentication requests, but will never request them.
