Hi,

it's closed source, obscure and this results in a less secure operating
system.

Google: market share operating systems

The 1. hit I get claims that the most used operating system is Android,
see https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share .

The 2. hit claims Android, too, see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems .
The exception are desktop and laptop computers,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems#Desktop_and_laptop_computers
. Yes, Windows, but most computer devices nowadays aren't desktop
computers, just bad headlines related to vulnerabilities are almost
exclusively made by Windows. Every now and then some new iOS feature or
a router with a 20 years old tainted Linux kernel makes bad headlines,
too. Locking smartphones instead of Windows desktop computers would
probably generate more Bitcoin by blackmails.

Antivirus software is snake oil. Penetration testing is the way to
grant most possible security. It might make sense to check against
rootkits, but not to scan each piece of software, installed without any
meaningful verification in the first place. The way Antivirus software
is sold, is by spreading FUD. "Your Windows performance is slow, get
the paid Antivirus version to fix all performance issues now."

The way software is provided for FreeBSD, Linux distributions, "stores"
for operating systems such as iOS, by default usually comes with
meaningful security mechanisms, at least with signed checksums
and security updates. Windows has got no meaningful security concept at
all.

Regards,
Ralf
