Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it another try and tried out a number
of different types of OSs in the Compaq configuration. Some worked =
better
than
others (Linux, Windows 2000 and a few others worked well) others such as
MSDOS=20
locked up during the SMP initialization. I even went and reassigned some
IRQs by
hand.

Still no go. Those cards are invisible. I am about to give up and =
install
some
flavor of Linux. For my particular purpose, any Unix variant is okay, so
it's no
biggie. However I'd have liked to have a freebsd-only setup for this
particular
project (this is one of three servers, and the others -- Proliant DL360 =
G2
boxes --
run fbsd 4.8 without problems, and with the same Intel NIC.)

Just for curiosity's sake, here's my dmesg. If anyone sees something
suspicious,
please let me know. Yes, there is a problem with the SMP handling, but =
if
that
was the cuplrity, the cards should be seen in uniproc mode... (?).. =
There is
also
something wrong with the cdr, but that could be a dying drive.

Try playing with the Compaq config util and change the version of the =
OS.
Its likely that the mode you have it in now requires the OS to identify =
and
initialize the PCI-PCI bridge, or to initialize an additional Host to =
PCI
bridge.
