One possibility is that the 2000 box is attempting to do a reverse DNS 
lookup on the target box when you're telnetting or ftping.  Try adding 
the bsd box to the hosts file on the 2000 machine and see if that helps. 
  I can't say that i've seen that exact problem with windows machines, 
but I have seen that with a couple of different linux distros.  But it's 
rather possible that reverse DNS has been implemented in w2k.
