Unfortunately, when I = attempted to install the package I downloaded from the web for TK 8.3.1 = it complained that XFree86 3.3.6_6 was not installed. The web site = indicated that version 3.3.6_7 was the dependency. Have I gone batty? = I eventually gave up on finding 3.3.6_6 ... is the tar file for the = /usr/ports/x11 directory still out there someone that I haven't been = smart enough to find? 4. To get around issue #3, I finally broke down and hacked the packages = db directory and created the sub-directory "XFree86-3.3.6_6" with the = contents of the XFree86-3.3.6_4 directory. This allowed me to install = the TK-8.3.1 package! Yeah. However, will this come back to haunt me = some day? Was that a reeaaaalllllyyyyy bad idea? I wonder .... Hello.

I have been attempting to install = various=20 ports (such as TK-8.3.1) since monday and I have been having numerous = problems=20 obtaining the files, and sorting out dependencies.  Therefore, I am = seeking=20 advise regarding the following issues:

1.  Until yesterday, I could not = access ftp.freebsd.org at all (although I = could access=20 the mirror sites).  Even now, that site appears to be moving along=20 somewhere between 300 and 1200 baud.  :)

2.  Many of the ports that I am = attempting to=20 grab (say KDE 2.0.1) require XFree86 3.3.6_7 (according to the web = site). =20 When I attempt to grab the XFree86.tar file for the /usr/ports/x11 = directory (so=20 I can just run make) the download times out (see issue #1.)  No = problem, I=20 went after the file on one of the mirrors.  Unfortunately it wasn't = there.  Nor were any of the tar files (for the ports make = directories)=20 there.  Such as FreeBSD/branches/-current/ports/x11/XFree86.tar (as = indicated by the web site.)  Is it common for the mirrors to not = have these=20 files?  I did note that they do have the packages, but XFree86 and = KDE=20 2.0.1 weren't available in packages...  :(

3.  To get around issue #2, I = downloaded the=20 contents of the FreeBSD/branches/-current/ports/x11/XFree86 (and=20 sub-directories).  I was then able to do a make and make = install. =20 Unfortunately, when I attempted to install the package I downloaded from = the web=20 for TK 8.3.1 it complained that XFree86 3.3.6_6 was not installed.  = The web=20 site indicated that version 3.3.6_7 was the dependency.  Have = I gone=20 batty?  I eventually gave up on finding 3.3.6_6 ... is the tar = file=20 for the /usr/ports/x11 directory still out there someone that I haven't = been=20 smart enough to find?

4.  To get around issue #3, I = finally broke=20 down and hacked the packages db directory and created the sub-directory=20 "XFree86-3.3.6_6" with the contents of the XFree86-3.3.6_4 = directory.  This=20 allowed me to install the TK-8.3.1 package!  Yeah.  However, = will this=20 come back to haunt me some day?  Was that a reeaaaalllllyyyyy bad=20 idea?  I wonder ....

If any of you have any advice for me, I = would=20 really appreciate it.  Thanks!
