you can give make the -DNOCLEAN flag:
make -DNOCLEAN buildworld

I use it on -stable and -current with no problems.

HOWEVER, should your builds fail or you get strange run-time errors, remove your object tree and do a clean build and install before you post to a mailinglist or send in a pr.
