Contrary to common sense, you can have a > secondary without a primary --- and this often works for those BIOSs. I've had problems with freebsd with it not picking up the second IDE bus when there wasn't a second device on the first bus. Most recently on a P133 with two disks, I tried to put one per channel and the second bus wasn't found. I just moved the second disk to the first bus and disabled the 2nd IDE bus competely (all the speed dependant things were on scsi disk).
