Actually, after some trial-and-error last night I was able to get the floppy installation to work. The problem that I was having was that I did not have the correct directory structure on the installation floppy. I had originally had the following on the initial disk: a:\bin\bin.inf a:\bin\bin.aa a:\bin\bin.ab a:\bin\bin.ac a:\bin\bin.ad however, the installation only worked with the following directory structure on the initial disk: a:\freebsd\bin\bin.inf a:\freebsd\bin\bin.aa a:\freebsd\bin\bin.ab a:\freebsd\bin\bin.ac a:\freebsd\bin\bin.ad It may be important to note that I am using the CD distribution from the UNIX Unleashed, System Administrators Edition (Sams Publishing). On this CD the bin.inf, bin.aa, etc. are stored in the same directory (d:\freebsd\bin). I do not know if this is different than other distributions of FreeBSD, but that my have been the problem. 2) I now have another problem in that once the installation of the bin packages has completed, the installation procedure stops and then says that other installation components have not been installed (doc, compat1x, games, ports, etc.). Again, I am trying to do a full installation. Any ideas here? BACKGROUND: =========== I am trying to install FreeBSD via floppy disk. I go through the following steps in selecting the installation options: 1. I have successfully created the installation boot disk image. 2. I am able to successfully boot the computer with this disk. 3. I select "Start kernel configuration in visual mode". 4. I resolve conflicts, save and exit. 5. I select the "Novice" installation method. 6. In the "FDISK Partition Editor" I select "Use Entire Disk", then save and exit. 7. I select the standard MBR to install. 8. In the "FreeBSD Disklabel Editor" I select "Auto Defaults for all!" and exit. 9. I choose "All" distributions to install. 10. I select the "Basic DES encryption services". 11. I select the "Floppy" installation media. HARDWARE: ========= Zenith NoteFlex 486DX50 16MB RAM 810MB Hard Drive 1.44MB Floppy Disk 2 PCMCIA Slots No CD-ROM Thanks again, Brady K. Any other suggestions? Hm, need more detail. Press ALT-F2 after the error message and note anything interesting you see. Also check the boot messages (hit scroll lock then use the up arrow) and make sure your floppy drive is being probed.
