Were the drivers on the 1.44 floppy FreeBSD drivers?  Or, DOS, or WIN,
or WINxx drivers?  Most likely one of the later.

DOS, or WIN, or WINxx drivers will not work on FreeBSD.

What kind of ethernet card do you have?
