No, SMP should be fine.  Is the default device (disk1s2a) correct, ie.
you have another slice on the first harddisk before the FreeBSD slice?

Try other slices, eg: 'ls disk1s1a:'.  It's not unlikely that there's a 
miscalculation in the slice numbering somewhere.
