I have successfully made a working kernel that actually works with the zip drive! by the way... the default i/o address for the lpt0 port is wrong for most machines. should be 0x378 not 0x278. that was one problem, also had a typo in the /etc/disktab file 0's kinda look like o's! the next job is the sound card!
