Are you trying to communicate with a LAN? Do you have a second NIC? You may need to do DHCP for the nic connected to the cable modem and if you're trying to talk to other local machines, you'll probably need a second nic configured in the same manner as the other network interfaces in the LAN (DHCP or static IPs in the same domain/netmask.)
