Try using fetchmail in the ports


/usr/ports/mail/fetchmail


Can be configured to "fetch" pop2,pop3,imap,etc.  

Then you can use mh , pine, or any number of readers to access you mail on
your freebsd machine.

Or you can always just use Netscape communicator and use that mail reader
included (Heaven forbid I said this option,  never mind :) )
