Ollivier, Thanks for telling me libmd.so & libcompat.so were obsolete, it helped :-) Your 2nd guess was right: some of my binaries from a previous 2.something release (stamp is Nov 15 1995) were not overlayed by an over-the-local-net install, because of a problem with _collate_range_cmp & locale.h, on my current box, which prevented these compiling: csh sh awk grep sort tar fetch strfile so I'm doing a make world.
