I need root access to a 2.1.7 host. The old administrator left without
giving
anyone (any information) the root password. This machine does not have
a cdrom drive, only a floppy and the hard drives. The plan is to boot up
using the floppy, mount the root file system, vi /etc/passwd and remove the
root password, boot from the hard drive and log in as root. I searched the
FAQ and mailing list archives but did not find any instructions on doing
this sort of thing. I have booted using the install floppy, and then opened

vty4. However, I can't seem to get any commands to work there.

Any help is appreciated,

Toby
