Granted, this isn't a FreeBSD issue, but you folks seem to know a lot about Adaptecs: Well, I'm stumped. I've got a problem with my hard drive configuration, and there's no obvious explanation... here's the story. The PC has its original IDE drive (C:) as the boot disk (FAT format, with ntldr on it). Added a PCI card, Adaptec 2940, Ultra-wide SCSI-II a while ago, with two Quantum internal drives. One wide, one narrow, the controller handles this automatically. However, because of the narrow drive, I can't use the external wide connector (which is why I want to move it to another controller as you'll see later). One Quantum drive has WinNT on it and apps, user accounts, etc. The other Quantum drive has games, kits, misc unimportant stuff. Added a PCI card, Adaptec 2920, SCSI-II (regular, narrow) a short time ago for my HP DAT drive and the scanner I got for Christmas. All works fine _until_ I attempt to move the SCSI-II narrow Quantum drive over to the SCSI-II controller. Everything goes through its BIOS installs correctly, the IDE drive is installed first, the SCSI cards recognize each drive.. ..then when its supposed to run ntldr off C:, it says " Drive Not Ready Error". If I boot from a floppy, no drives are visible. If I simply disconnect the narrow Quantum (that I'm trying to move) or put it back on the Ultra-wide controller, everything is normal. I even tried disconnecting the DAT and scanner so that the narrow controller had nothing but the drive on it, same thing. It turns out the same problem occurs if I connect an external drive to the narrow controller -- " Drive Not Ready Error". Now everyone tells me that when there's a mix of IDE and SCSI drives, the IDE drive will be the one to boot anyway. The only way to get a SCSI boot drive (which I don't need) is to disable the IDE drive. So I disabled my "PCI IDE" interface in the PC's BIOS and it skips installing the C: drive (disabling the "ISA IDE" didn't do anything). However, when there's no IDE drive, get a strange "Serial port 2 conflict" error, not that I expected anything to work, because the SCSI disks aren't prepared to boot anything. So, the puzzle remains, why can't I connect a SCSI drive to my narrow controller without the PC losing its mind?? Why would this have any affect on the IDE C: drive? Odd thing is, if I leave the narrow Quantum attached to the narrow SCSI (2920) and disable the BIOS in the 2940's utilitity, the ntldr will boot off the IDE drive like its supposed to! (Of course, since NT is on the drive connected to the 2940, it won't do much more than that).
