Well, color me a newbie.

after changing my kernel config line to 
device ed

and having a pccard.conf  with
io 0x240-0x360
irw 9 13

card "Linksys" "Etherfast 10/100 PC Card (PCMPC100 V2)"
	config auto "ed" ?
	insert /etc/pccard_ether $device
	remove /sbin/ifconfig $device delete

and rc.conf with 
pccard_mem="0xd8000"
pccard_ifconfig="inet IP.ADDR.HERE netmask"
defaultrouter="GW.IP.HERE"
pccard_conf="/etc/pccard.conf"
pccard_beep="1"
pccard_enable="YES"

the card works fine. Thanks for all your help everyone.
