Apparently, all http://www.freebsd.org/ pages suppose 'white' color as default background. However, if the user sets another default background in the browser, pages become to look ugly.

Just go to any browser and set default background to anything different from white. I catched the situation from Opera.

I would propose to set BGCOLOR tag in BODY or do it somehow else, in CSS for example.
