sysctl hw.acpi.lid_switch_state=S3
It can also be done via devd.conf, I imagine

Most event-based stuff can be configured via devd, and available
sysctl values can be seen via sysctl -a ... 

Also, for most well-established features the handbook and faq are good
places to look.
