The "boot only" installation CD assumes you have some kind of Internet connection available, which is one of the first steps in bsdinstall pre-install configuration. From that point on, resources will be obtained via online connection. If you want to do a base install, use the DVD #1 disc image. It contains everything to install the OS. > I tried to install on ata3. bsdinstall actually created partitons on=20 > that disk. That is correct. Did you use the "auto" approach, or did you define everything manually? > BUT, BSDINSTALL ALSO STABBED ATA0 AND MADE IT UNBOOTABLE. Thanks. You probably selected to install the boot manager, which is to be installed on the 1st disk of the system (because that's where tne "post-POST entry point" is. In your case, ada0 is probably that first disk. > I guess FreeBSD install is just broken. Worked just fine for me; I recently used the DVD #1 to install 12.0 amd64 (single disk install onto a SSD as ada0). As per the handbook - downloaded, verified, burned, booted - worked. As it has for decades. :-) Coming back to the initial problem you described: Is your optical unit attached via USB? Or is it an internal (probably SATA) one? The error messages shown at the top indicate some problem with a USB controller... --=20 Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ...
