None solved the problem, but all contributed a bit to the eventual solution. pkg_delete -rf pkgconfig* cvsup -L2 cd ports/x11/gnome2 make clean make install clean restored things to sanity (apart from the usual build inconsistencies). This was the solution proposed on www.freebsd.org/gnome for a different but structurally related problem. Thanks for all Your efforts wrt to this issue.
