From what I've read (second hand info, I haven't checked it) SMP was the one thing where linux was clearly ahead of BSD. In nearly everything else, the BSD's (FreeBSD, at least) are ahead, even of linux 2.4, by varying margins. Linux can't be too bad at tcp/ip if it runs sites like google and deja.com. On the other hand, I don't think the 2.2 kernel matches BSD in that. 2.4 is supposed to have severe problems with memory management, one of the things holding it back from release. From what I've seen on machines I've used, 2.2 definitely isn't as good at memory management as FreeBSD either. Rahul.
