You should visit the FreeBSD home pages (http://www.freebsd.org)

Then, click on "release information" - and look at the "Release Notes"
for the particular version of FreeBSD you're interested in installing
(I'm happy with 3.0, but you may want to be more conservative and
try 2.2.8.)

The Release Notes for the particular version present you with a rather
lengthy hardware compatibility list.

 The short answers are:
	1) Don't mess with a WinModem of any kind - it only works under
	   windows.

	2) Just about any hard drive, SCSI, IDE, etc...

	3) FreeBSD uses just about any video card - but X11 is the
defination of graphics. So, to choose a nice video card
	   for X11, see http://www.xfree86.org/

My typical answer to questions like this is:

First, decide how much money you want to spend. Buy the computer
	that costs that much.
