I have a customer who needs to run a bunch of modems off a multiport
serial card.  Someone on this list mentioned that they were using
FreeBSD as a terminal server with 16 ports without any trouble.  What
serial boards are you using?

The application in this case is to provide SLIP/PPP to about 16 ports
for an ISP setup.

The other option we're looking at is a dedicated terminal server
box, but the FreeBSD option would probably be cheaper.
