This may not be a very relevant matter, but the following command in my
problem-free environment returns the following results.
Looking in /usr/local/bin seems to be the next best thing when
/usr/local/lib/qt5/* is not found.
To begin with, I think the resulting binary doesn't have /usr/local/lib/qt5,
which is why it is behaving that way.

Command:
strings /usr/local/bin/qmake-qt5 | less "+/file to open is a directory"

Result:
file to open is a directory
