I updated my src tree (which got me to version 1.42, not 1.43),
and then applied the patch in this message (which looks about the
same as 1.43). This did not solve my java-install hang problem.

I still see that:
     /usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.1/bin/java -version

will print out:
    java version "1.4.1_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_02-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_02-b06, mixed mode)

and then hang. But on the very same system, the command:
    ktrace -di -f /tmp/ktrace.version \
          /usr/local/linux-sun-jdk1.4.1/bin/java -version

will print out the same three lines, and then return to a shell
prompt instead of hanging. This is on a kernel which does have
INVARIANTS, INVARIANTS_SUPPORT, and WITNESS, and does *not* have
WITNESS_SKIPSPIN, if that's significant.

I am going to try it again with version 1.41 and see if that
works any better.
