Although I do run some "sudo make install clean" in parallel, I won't recommend it if you're a beginner. The reason is that the ports system manages a database that you're likely to break if 2 packages try to commit at the same time. It is not an unrecoverable situation (you can always remove the database file and recreate it) but it's a pain in the neck if you try to portinstall something and ruby dies on you dumping the core all over the place.
