We've set up a VPN here with PPTP using mpd. It was fairly painless and now our Windows users can VPN to our internal network from home by going through our FreeBSD server running mpd. You can find mpd in the ports collection.

As far as setting up a VPN between differents site using IPSec or SSH through PPP, I've never done it, so I can't offer any help there.
