 For what it's worth I've done some more testing and the problem 
 doesn't seem to be restricted to xterms.  The same behaviour can be 
 reproduced using pterms, aterms, and eterms.
 
 I've also confirmed that other people can reproduce the issue, 
 although all on 6.x i386 boxes.
